Why?

Why do we as Young Friends want to become a formal structure in our own right?

Leith Because, to paraphrase Avon's comment below, we already are a coherent and important quaker group. The only new bit here is the 'formal' part. Young Friends have a structure, we have traditions, we have ways of doing things. To some extent I feel we are defined by our commitment to accepting people on any grounds . . . I think we really live the 'no dogma, no creed' stuff. We don't require anything of our members - not even their presence. Perhaps we are slightly more insulated from the discourses about being a 'good' quaker that are inherent in the workings of Friends more generally. One of the things that scares me is that in the process of becoming recognised by YM and the wider Friend's community we might be tempted to lose some of these strengths. Perhaps we'll offer greater involvement, or more administration, or more gatherings. I've got nothing against any of these things as an individual, but I think we need to be very careful about the idea we as a group are being 'given' something and therefore need to reciprocate. My intention was never to take on more responsibility or to change YFs. In some ways we have a lot to offer precisely because we are, in general, less involved. We hold in trust the element of critique . . . of being reflexive about quaker processes. Curses, have forgotten what the questions was in the first place lol . . .never mind, hopefully you get the gist :) (07/12/06)

To facilitate being able to consider issues that are of relevance to YFs that come from Yearly Meeting, but also to be in a position take to YM, the concerns of YFs.

To enable us to better keep track of YFs, because we know that local Meetings sometimes struggle to do this, due to YFs not always being known to their local Meetings, and/or may not regularly be in touch with their local Meetings.

To give us a forum to communicate more regularly, and to broaden the scope of the things we can do (ie more than just having fun at a camp once a year).

To give isolated YFs a means of being a meaningful part of a Quaker community and providing a support network for them.

To give YFs the kind of experience that will enable us to take a fuller part in the life of the Yearly Meeting, as we grow up and on from just being involved in YFs, recognising that this transition may happen at any age.

From the experience of longstanding YFs they have greatly appreciated having travel expenses & accommodation covered by the YM/MM when they were penniless and this commitment to them has bourn fruit from their continued involvement with Friends and financial contributions once able.

Hi. This is God. I thought you guys needed a modern medium with which to enhance your spirituality. Flaming bushes are so last month (and also pose a fire hazard . . . not to mention being irresponsible in times of drought). Remember that there is that of me in you. Don't be freaked out, that's not meant literally. Please note that disrespect will result in damnation, hellfire, and mildew. Later.
